This article, dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the great poet and enlightener Abai Kunanbayev, illuminates the enduring relevance of his legacy in modern society. The title of the article, taken from the prescient words of Alash figure Mirzhakyp Dulatov, serves as a unifying theme, highlighting how the bond between the people and the poet’s heritage only grows stronger over time. This work offers a concise overview of the study and popularization of Abai’s creative works. The authors trace this process from the early 20th century through the Soviet period, when Abai studies were placed on a solid institutional and scientific foundation. Special emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of Mukhtar Auezov, whose epic novel «The Path of Abai» elevated the great thinker to the pedestal of world culture. A primary focus of the article is the introduction of a historical document from the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan into scholarly discourse. Specifically, this is a memo from Gabiden Mustafin that reveals details about the preparations for Abai’s 100th anniversary in 1944, during a difficult wartime for the country. Thus, the article not only examines the ways and directions of popularizing Abai’s legacy but also discusses how profound respect for his personality and work has been demonstrated at the state level over many years.
